2023: Year in Review

With Lexi & Analiesa after the semifinals for the STL Teen Talent Competition!

Winter

2023 - what a year we had as a studio! In February, Analiesa Hollowood and Lexi Lloyd advanced to the semifinals of the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition. Both girls performed beautifully and received some great feedback from the panel of judges.

Spring

Spring is always a busy season for musicians, and this year was no different!

Top: With Analiesa after the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs’ State Competition; Bottom: With Natalie, Aubrey, and Analiesa at YPT’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

In March, Analiesa, Lexi, Emma Williss, and Alyssa Riegerix took part in our Federation Scholarship & District competition. All four girls received Superiors for their performances! Analiesa was named the District winner and went on to win First Runner Up in the State competition in May. Both Analiesa and Emma were awarded college music major scholarships, and Alyssa was awarded a summer camp scholarship. Also in March, Lexi received a 1 on her solo at District Solo & Ensemble and advanced to the State competition.

April saw the return of an in-person National Federation of Music Clubs festival weekend at a new venue, UMSL. To help our piano students get ready to play for a judge in person again, studio alumn, Jack Ferry, came back to judge for a practice “festival” at the studio. It was so fun having Jack judge, and his comments were very helpful for everyone who took part. 47 students from our studio participated in the big festival at UMSL, and for the fifth year in a row all of our students earned Superiors for their performances!

In addition to competitions and festivals, spring was full of shows! Aubrey Simpson (“Sally Jackson”) and Zane Stephens (“Poseidon”) appeared in Francis Howell Central’s production of The Lightning Thief. Lexi played “The Sour Kangaroo” in Fort Zumwalt South’s Seussical, while Olivia Brown was a “Bird Girl” in Miss Patti’s Musical Theatre’s Seussical. Alyssa (“Lavender”) performed in St. Charles West’s Matilda. Ava Henson was in the ensemble of her middle school’s production of The Wizard of Oz Jr. To cap off the spring show season, Analiesa (“The Toymaker”) and Aubrey (Ensemble) were in YPT’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

Summer

Left: With Charlotte after Oklahoma!

Top Right: With Ava after Newsies Jr.; Bottom Right: With Lexi after ACTT

Our show season continued into the summer! Charlotte appeared in the Ensemble of LifeLight Youth Theatre’s Oklahoma in June.

Several of our students took part in performing arts summer camps this year. Ava played “Les” in Wenztville Christian Church’s Newsies Jr. Alyssa (“Miss Honey”), Shreeya (“Lavender”), and Sarah M. (Ensemble) were in St. John UCC’s sold out run of Matilda Jr. Genevieve (Ensemble) and Olivia (Ensemble) performed in LifeLight’s The Sound of Music: Youth Edition. All of these summer camps are only a week or two and it’s always amazing to see what these talented and hardworking casts and crews are able to accomplish in such a short time!

This year’s Mid America Music Festival was in Kansas City. Shreeya & Yash traveled to represent our studio and Shreeya received Superiors for all three of her entries!

In August, Lexi performed with the Arch City Kids Theater Troupe in their yearly Broadway revue benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. ACTT’s production is entirely run by students!

Class of 2023

At the end of the summer, we had a recital for our high school voice and piano students and said goodbye to our graduating class:

  • Emma is majoring in Music Education at UMKC Conservatory! She is passionate about music education and I’m excited to see how she grows as a musician in her time at the conservatory.

  • Analiesa is attending SLU and double majoring in biology & music, with plans to continue on to medical school. Ana is a gifted singer and I’m so glad she’s continuing her vocal studies in college!

  • Stella is majoring in biology at Mizzou and plans to continue on to veterinary school. Stella took lessons with me for 14 years(!), so it‘s a bittersweet adjustment not seeing her every week! She said she’s already played the piano at the dorm a few times - I know music will be a lifelong companion for her.

  • Maya is at Missouri S&T majoring in biological sciences, with a minor in bioinformatics. Maya has always been such a pleasure to teach and I’m excited to see where her microbiology career takes her!

  • Tanvi is in the six year B.A./M.D. program at UMKC. It’ll be a busy and challenging college career for her, but she is a smart and determined student and I know she’s got this!

Fall

Our studio has been bursting at the seams for a few years now, so at the beginning of the school year we added a teacher to our studio - Jennifer Ferry! Jen’s education, experience, dedication to music, and love for children made her the perfect addition to our studio. Thanks to Jen we have warmly welcomed even more students into our studio family!

Many students in our studio played in their school bands this year, and two students played piano in their school bands. Ethan Williss was back at the keyboard in Francis Howell Central’s Spartan Regiment, and Sarah J. again played for her school’s jazz band. I love that our piano students are able to use their talents at school!

Right: With Olivia after Beauty & the Beast

In October, Lexi was selected for the Metro 8 SATB Honors Choir, Jaida Neufarth was selected for the Metro 8 SSAA Honors Choir, and Sarah M. was selected for the Metro 8 Middle School Honors Choir. All three choirs performed in a concert at the Touhill in November.

Our fall recital was at Lakeside 370 Park again this year, with 37 students performing for the first time ever without me there! In 16 years of teaching, I’ve never had to miss a recital, but I guess there’s a first time for everything! One of our wonderful studio families stepped up and hosted the first recital, and Jennifer took over the second recital. I’m told both recitals went great, despite it being a very blustery day!

Early in November, Olivia (Ensemble/Featured Dancer) appeared in Miss Patti’s production of Beauty & the Beast. The leads were amazing and I had such a fun time at the show!

Holidays/Winter

Top: With Zane & Natalie after Godspell

Bottom: Jen directing the Music for Little Mozarts Christmas concert

December kicked off with Zane appearing as “John the Baptist” in YPT’s Godspell. and what a fantastic production it was! Also early in the month, Hayden Holz performed a piano solo for his school’s Advent service.

Miss Jen spent the holiday season teaching our preschool Music for Little Mozarts program at Hope Lutheran Church Preschool! We had nine sweet preschoolers who worked hard learning their songs and gave an outstanding performance for their friends and family.

Our studio Christmas recital was packed out this year with 56 kids performing in three recitals! These are always my favorite recitals of the year - I just love gathering together to listen to holiday music and it’s a beautiful way to cap off a beautiful year of growth in musicianship.

Thank you to all of our wonderful families and students for another great year! Jennifer and I are looking forward to an exciting 2024!

With gratitude,

Kelly

In February, I was invited to be on the judging panel for Francis Howell Central’s state preview choir concert - what a fun opportunity! It was great to see so many sweet students & studio alumni.

spring

Top: With Jane & her Solo & Ensemble certificate; Bottom: Alyssa, far right

Spring kicked off with District Solo & Ensemble in March! Jane Childs received a 1 on both her solo and ensemble, and Joe Weidig & Grace Bahru received 1s on their ensemble performances.

In April, 45 students took part in our local National Federation of Music Clubs’ Gold Cup Festival. For the fourth year in a row, all of our students who competed received a Superior for their entries!

Springtime was also a busy show season! In April, Alyssa Riegerix made her Center Stage debut as “Lily” in The Giver at St. Charles Community College, and Joe appeared as “Jeff Knightly” in Francis Howell Central’s production of Emma: A Pop Musical. In May, Ava Henson was “Pua” in her school’s production of Moana Jr., and Analiesa Hollowood (“Widow Corney”) and Joe (“Mr. Bumble”) performed in YPT’s production of Oliver!

studio alumni

Two of our 2018 studio alumni graduated with performing arts degrees this year!

Clockwise from top left: Abram Cutshall; Abram (center) in Mamma Mia!; Jennifer Ferry; Jennifer as Elsa

  • Abram Cutshall graduated from the Dobbins Conservatory at Southeast Missouri State University with his BFA in Acting in May. Abram spent his summer in Mamma Mia! with Ozark Actors Theatre and then moved to Chicago where he is currently taking improv classes with Second City. He is working at Steppenwolf Theatre Company (not as an actor - yet!) and was recently cast as the lead in a new short film that will begin shooting in July 2023.

  • Jennifer Ferry completed degrees in music and marketing at Washington University this spring. Between her sophomore and junior years in college, Jennifer bought Enchanted Events, the singing princess company she had worked for since high school. She is now working in marketing, while also owning, operating, and performing with Enchanted Events! Through Enchanted Events, Jennifer has gotten to perform for St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the Make a Wish Foundation, and even traveled across the country. Please consider using Enchanted Events for any character birthday party or special event needs you may have!

summer

Top: With Lacey after the show on opening night! Bottom: With Jennifer at the pre-show dinner.

We kicked off summer with a studio recital at Steinway Piano Gallery in June! 21 students performed and our voice students were accompanied by my childhood piano teacher, Alice Perrey. It’s always fun to collaborate with her. That same weekend, Ava was in Wenztville Christian Church’s production of Beauty & the Beast Jr., and later in the month Analiesa & Joe performed in YPT’s International Thespian Society show.

In July, Alyssa appeared as “Fiona” in St. John UCC’s sold out run of Shrek Jr. The kids did a great job and the show was directed by a fellow WIU music alumn! At the end of the month, eight students received Superiors on their nine solos at the Mid America Music Festival. They all put in a lot of hard work on their pieces and it’s so nice when that pays off!

Lacey Fowler performed in the teen ensemble in The Muny’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in August! The show was absolutely amazing and I had such a fun time seeing it with studio alumn, Jennifer! Also in August, Lexi Lloyd performed in Arch City Kids Theater Troupe’s annual benefit revue. I had to miss the show, but I heard it was great.

class of 2022

At the end of the summer, we had a studio recital for high school voice & piano students and sent off our seniors:

  • Lacey headed off to New York to pursue a BFA in Dance with an emphasis in Jazz at Marymount Manhattan. She’s a beautiful dancer with a bright career ahead of her!

  • Sophia Prost is majoring in International Studies on the Pre-Med track at Ole Miss. She is super driven and a smart cookie and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!

  • Joe is pursuing a degree in Technical Theater at SIUE. He’s a very talented actor and I’m excited that he’s planning to continue performing and also singing with choir at college!

  • Jane is attending St. Charles Community College and pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. She is a great encourager & cheerleader and her future students are going to be so lucky to have her for a teacher!

fall

Top: Ethan performing with the Spartan Regiment; Bottom: With Ana & Emma at the Metro 8 concert

Throughout September & October, Analiesa was “Sandy”, Cinderella’s stepsister in the St. Louis Renaissance Faire and she performed the closing song each day of the fair!

Ethan Williss spent marching band season playing keys in Francis Howell Central’s Spartan Regiment. The band had a great 2022 season, and I enjoyed getting to work with Ethan on piano marching band music. Sarah played piano with her school’s jazz band - jazz band piano music is quite different from solo music and Sarah met the challenge head on!

Analiesa and Lexi were selected for the Metro 8 SATB Honors Choir and Emma Williss was selected for the Metro 8 SSAA Honors Choir. Both choirs performed beautifully in a concert at the Touhill.

Our fall recital was at Lakeside 370 Park in October. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and all 46 students rocked their performances through all the distractions being outside can bring! I have loved our outdoor recitals for that reason - it requires a whole different set of concentration skills from our indoor, more formal recitals.

holidays/winter

Top: With Natalie, Ava, and Ana after Footloose

Bottom: With Charlotte after Elf Jr.

December saw the return of our studio Christmas recital - the first one since 2018 since 2019 was snowed out. This year, 52 students performed seasonal favorites over three recitals. It was so good to gather with friends and family and ring in the holiday season!

The next weekend, Analiesa (“Vi”), Natalie Martin (“Lulu Warnicker”), and Ava (Ensemble) were in YPT’s production of Footloose. The show was so much fun and they sold out the entire run!

Other holiday studio highlights included Hayden Holz performing a piano solo for his school’s Advent service, and Charlotte D. performing in the ensemble of LifeLight Youth Theater’s production of Elf Jr.

I know many, many students also performed throughout the year with their school choirs and bands, for their music classes at school, and in their church worship services. With a studio of 70+ kids, there is always someone performing somewhere! I’m so proud of all the growth I’ve seen this year and I’m excited to make some beautiful music in 2023!

This was Jack’s 14th consecutive superior and he was awarded the Grand Cup for this achievement.

Also in April, Carson Howe (“Joe”), Elliott Jenner (“Tom”), and Joe Weidig (“George”) were in their school’s production of School House Rock Live!. Joe appeared as “Hugo” and Analiesa Hollowood was in the ensemble of Tuck Everlasting with Young People’s Theatre in May.

Carson received a Director’s Award and Elliott was awarded a Silver Shield of Excellence, which is awarded yearly to one student in each department. Jack was awarded the Knightpride Bandsman award at Francis Howell North. This award is the highest award given by the band!

Fall

Jane Childs, Analiesa, and Joe were all selected for the Metro 8 SATB Honors Choir, and Joe qualified for an audition for the State Honor Choir. Emma Williss was selected for the Metro 8 SSAA Honors Choir.

We had a fall recital in October at Calvary Church. It was windy, but fun! It was great to see some of our virtual students in person.

Shreeya was asked to sing the national anthem for her school’s Veteran’s Day ceremony and Yash played a piano solo for his school’s mass. I know that several other piano students were asked to play for their music classes at school throughout the fall semester as well.

Holidays/Winter

Analiesa at the Teen Talent Prelims!

During the holiday season, Hayden Holz played a piano solo for his school’s advent service. Joe (“Santa”) and Alyssa Riegerix (Ensemble) appeared in Elf with Young People’s Theatre, while Ethan & Carson performed with Ambassadors of Harmony in their annual Christmas show the same weekend.

Analiesa & Lacey advanced to the semifinal round of the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation’s Teen Talent Competition. They will each compete in January for the chance to move on to the final round at The Fabulous Fox Theatre.

Congrats to all of our students on their musical accomplishments this year! I’m looking forward to an exciting year of performances and competitions in 2022!

Also in April, Jennifer Ferry appeared as the Nightingale of Samarkand in her high school's production of Once Upon a Mattress. Jennifer also competed at the Missouri State Solo and Ensemble Festival and received a 1 rating for her solo!

In May, Morgan Hanson went silver from head to toe for her role as Neleus in DaySpring Arts' production of Mary Poppins. Later in the month, Kate Bascio did a wonderful job representing our Federation chapter at the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs statewide competition.

Stella Gilfoil and Jack Ferry both participated in the Jim Widner Big Band Camp at UMSL in June. Stella attended on scholarship from Federation. Even though it was her first year at camp, Stella got placed in the level 2 band. It was definitely a challenge, but she worked hard and did a fantastic job at the performance at the end of the week!

June always brings one of my favorite events of the year - Broadway Camp! I had such a fun week leading a Moana themed camp with Miss Kathy. Just thinking about it makes me excited for this year's camp!

Post-performance smiles!

Post-performance smiles!

Jack attended the University of Central Missouri Summer Piano Institute on scholarship at the end of June. I was unable to attend the end of week performances, but the video his parents took had me blown away with his progress in one week of camp. Summer camps are a great opportunity to make big strides in a short amount of time.

August and September are quiet months of lessons as everyone heads back to school and begins their fall activities. It's also the time of year I start thinking about Christmas music! It's never too early to start it, you know. :)

In October, Morgan Hanson appeared as Flounder in her high school's production of The Little Mermaid. She was the only Freshman cast in a leading role! Also in October, Lacey Fowler performed in Variety Children's Theatre's production of The Wizard of Oz. In addition to being in the ensemble, she was also a member of the Lullaby League. Variety is such a unique and special event - if you've never been to one of their performances, I would definitely recommend it!

I attended my first former-student wedding, so I'm officially old - haha. Congrats to Reece & Caleb on their marriage! Reece was one of my very first students back in 2007.

Mr. & Mrs. Haney!

Mr. & Mrs. Haney!

We closed out the year with our annual Christmas recital, which I couldn't have pulled off without my mom (hi, mom!) taking care of all the refreshments. 2017 was a year to remember for sure, and 2018 has already had its highlights! Looking forward to making lots of memories this year!

Summer Review

Trisha & I between acts on closing night.

Trisha & I between acts on closing night.

September is here and I am in high gear choosing new repertoire for everyone, helping students prepare for school talent show, community theatre, and district choir auditions, and (yes, I'll admit it) even starting to think about CHRISTMAS music! Fall seems to be such an exciting time as the weather changes and lessons pick back up. However! Summer is an exciting time too! Summer break can be a great time to take advantage of camps and performance opportunities in some of the fantastic professional and community theatres in our area. Before I get too far into fall planning and dreaming of Christmas, I wanted to catch you up with what some of my students have been up to this summer because they have been doing some amazing things!

In May, Trisha Iyer made her Opera Theatre of Saint Louis debut in La bohème! She was one of twelve students from the Saint Louis Children's Choirs chosen through auditions to be a part of the children's chorus in Act II of the opera. It was so exciting to see her on stage with the pros and I know it was an amazing experience for her.

Jennifer receiving her scholarship from Missouri Federation of Music Clubs president, Julie Watson.

Jennifer receiving her scholarship from Missouri Federation of Music Clubs president, Julie Watson.

Also in May, Jennifer Ferry competed in the Missouri Federation of Music Club's state competition where she was awarded a full scholarship to attend the summer vocal camp at Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony in Eureka Springs, AR. IPFAC is home to Opera in the Ozarks, which provides training to up and coming young artists through its summer intensive. At the end of the week of camp students presented a fully staged musical on Saturday night - this year's musical was Godspell - and a choir concert on Sunday afternoon. Campers also took part in a master class where they performed solos they worked on during the week.

Jack at the piano with his band.

Jack at the piano with his band.

Jack Ferry attended the Jim Widner Jazz Camp at UMSL in June. This was the second year in a row that Jack was able to attend on scholarship from our Federation chapter! At the camp, students are placed in big bands for the week and work on songs to perform at an end of the week concert. They receive training in music theory and improvisation, and take master classes during the week. At the end of each day they are treated to a concert by the Jim Widner Big Band. There is no age limit to the camp, so it's fun to see such a wide range of age and experience playing together. I've been amazed both years at how great all the bands sound after just a week of working together! If your student is at all interested in jazz music, this camp is a great way to get your feet wet without being thrown in to the deep end. :)

Morgan Hanson spent July rehearsing in DaySpring School of the Arts' production of Peter Pan, in which she played one of the Lost Boys. There was a huge cast in the show and Morgan did a fantastic job in her role!

It was so fun to see these students performing around the city (and out of state!). If you're a current student and want to know more about any of these camps or competitions, I'd love share more on how to get involved!

Morgan & I after her closing night performance of Peter Pan!

Morgan & I after her closing night performance of Peter Pan!

Next up in the realm of special student performances: Jennifer Ferry is competing THIS Saturday at the Saint Louis Art Fair in the River Blender's Chorus Sing for Scholarships competition. Jennifer was one of five finalists chosen and the winner is decided by the audience, so I'd love to see you there to cheer her on! Then in October, Lacey Fowler will be performing in Beauty and the Beast with the Variety Children's Theatre - I believe her rehearsals start any day now and I'm so excited to see what kind of enchanted object she'll be in the castle :)

I think that's all for now - I'll see you around the studio!

Gold Cup Festival Re-cap 2016

What a great festival we had this year! Special congratulations to Jack Ferry who was awarded a scholarship to attend UMSL's Jazz Camp this summer, to Jennifer Ferry who won first runner-up in the district competition with her art song solo and will be going on to represent our club at state, and to Aaron Jackson who was awarded a college scholarship to use at UMSL this fall when he begins his degree program in piano performance!
